From the President... October 24, 2015 (#10)
Greetings once again Blues Fans!!
Good day Blues fans!! As I’m preparing to board the 25th Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise in Ft. Lauderdale, I contemplate what an incredible run of touring bands we’ve had in our fair city in the last month or so -- with Big Brother & the Holding Company (Park City Egyptian Theater), Dave and Phil Alvin (The State Room), Tab Benoit (Park City’s O.P. Rockwell), The Steepwater Band (Hog Wallow) and Gregg Allman, ZZ Ward, Beth Hart and Blues Traveler, all at The Depot. And your UBS was set up and representin’ at all of ‘em! .
As we recover from all these great shows, our next appearance will be November 28 at The State Room with long time favorite around these parts, six time Blues Music Award winning guitarist and vocalist, Tommy Castro – who also has a brand new release out as of yesterday, “Method To My Madness”!!!
So, that means now is an opportune time to get out and support the many local Blues bands and jams around town! You can always find out about local Blues bands on our UBS website under, surprise, surprise, “Local Bands” (and this is yet another shout out to any of you bands who either aren’t listed, or if listed, still need to get me your info! Look at the format of those already listed and Eml me your band’s bio/vitals!). You can also find out about Blues gigs on our Calendar feature (thanks Christie D!!!) where you’ll see such notable greats as the venerable West Temple Taildraggers blues jam every Monday night at the Green Pig, to the latest addition, Tom Reinerth’s Open Mic Blues Jam up north for at least the next two months at The Funk and Dive in Ogden. We hope to have an even better Calendar system soon, and perhaps even with the ability to allow bands to post their gigs themselves. And this week on the Blues Cruise, I’m going to be quizzing other Blues Society peeps on their suggestions in this regard, keeping track of membership, and such as well.
Two important “Save the Dates”!!! First, our 2nd Annual Member Appreciation Holiday Party will once again be held a week before Christmas at The State Room. Friday, December 18, mark your calendars for our free party for you, the UBS member. Not a member? Become one there, and stock up on some choice new UBS schwag we will be debuting for the holidays! More about this holiday hoopla soon but for now, save the date.
Second, we’re thrilled to announce that the 2nd Annual Utah Blues Festival will be Saturday, June 18 at the Gallivan Center in downtown SLC!!! In just our first year, we’ve about outgrown the beautiful Utah Cultural Celebration Center, AND, you commented, and we listened – MORE SHADE. We agree. And the Gallivan serves up lots of it. Once again, much more to come in the upcoming months re: the UBF but for now, save the date!!
On a sad note, we lost a frequent visitor to SLC from the days of yore… Dallas, TX guitar slinger Smokin’ Joe Kubek. Just before taking the stage on 10/11/15 at a Blues Fest in North Carolina, he suffered a fatal heart attack. He last played here in 2010 at Pat’s BBQ and also played The Depot, Snowbird’s 2001 Blues Fest, and then at least half a dozen times before that at the ol’ Dead Goat Saloon – always with his musical partner
B’nois King. Making ends meet is problematic for any full time Blues musician, but Joe had been having a difficult time financially recently due to his beloved wife Phyllis’s battle with breast cancer. He had been staying off the road alot so he could be home to take care of her. She could always count on Joe to be there for her, but now that he's gone, Phyllis will now be on her own and left without income and plenty of bills to pay. If Joe (and B’Nois) ever filled a hole in your soul, and you’re so inspired, feel free to help out Phyllis at: https://www.gofundme.com/LuvFund4Phyllis or through PayPal using her email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Hoping for smooth sailing Bluesin’ on the High Seas in the shadow of Hurricane Patricia!!
... Love Them Blues,
