From the President...       December 14, 2015

Greetings once again Blues Fans!!

Good afternoon Blues fans!! And Happy Holidays! That also means it’s time for the Utah Blues Society Member Appreciation Holiday Party! We will once again do it the week before Christmas at The State Room. That’s this Friday, December 18, at 7 p.m., our second annual! Come early to socialize and check out all the brand-new UBS merchandise we will be debuting, courtesy as usual of the prodigious Bruno Designs. George T. Gregory will show off his new line-up at 8 p.m. and wail his brand of blues and R&B for a few hours – undoubtedly bringing up some special guests so stick and stay all night!

There is no cover charge - IT'S FREE! But it sure would be good karma if you were a UBS member, or became one at the party, or better yet, did so before the party online here. Being The State Room, there will be a cash bar of course.

You may have heard that Mike Ricks house essentially burned to the ground on December 4th. He lost everything. If you’re a long time blues fan you probably know Mike. If not, you deserve to know that the blues scene would not be where it is today without him. Starting in the very early 80s, Mike was the original bass player for the nationally renowned Rick Welter and the Tempo Timers, based right here in Salt Lake City. They held down the fort every Monday night at the Dead Goat Saloon for decades and turned countless people on to the blues. He also did the sound when we broadcast live national blues from the Dead Goat on the last Monday of every month on 90.9 FM KRCL. More recently, he’s done sound work for countless local and national bands/events and has held down the bass for, amongst others, Harry Lee & the Back Alley Blues Band, Utah’s longest running blues band. In showing our support for Mike, the UBS will be donating all proceeds from the sales of the incredible new merchandize we will be debuting, as well as the sales of hundreds of choice blues CD’s we’ll have for sale, AND The State Room is graciously donating all bar proceeds!!! Since it’s a free party, please do what you can to bring some expendable income to throw around on schwag, CD’s, brewhaha (responsibly!!!), etc. Part of our mission is to help those who have given their life to promoting blues music when they’re in need and there is no greater example of that than with respect to Mike Ricks.

And speaking of The State Room, they are committed to booking blues there, with the support of your UBS (i.e., with YOUR support). So be sure to plan on attending Bobby Rush (!!! WOW!! First time here!) on 1/20/16 and Mark Hummel (2/10/16). Your UBS will have tickets for these two shows this Friday at the Member Appreciation Holiday Party so please stop by our table and get them at a discount, with no fees too! Either show is $14 from the UBS, as opposed to $17 in advance and $20 at the door so get ‘em from us this Friday! Makes for great stocking stuffers too!). The State Room is also working on Carolyn Wonderland, John Nemeth, Indigenous, Anders Osborne and many more so stay tuned!

Snow’s dumpin’ so stay safe and warm, appreciate all that you have, and remember that everyone you come across is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Peace & Love, see you this Friday…

... Love Them Blues,

Brian Kelm - UBS President
