From the President... December 17, 2014
Greetings once again Blues Fans!! Utah Blues Society President Brian Kelm here with the second UBS Newsletter! Last time I gave you historical background on your UBS. This time, I’d like to give muchos kudos to those who have, of late, really given it wings. Tony Holiday of Tony Holiday & the Velvetones is the Vice-President. Check your local listings for when he’s playing – as good as he is on guitar, you’ll mostly find him blowing harp and singing nowadays. He seems to be on tour out of state as much as in, so catch him when you can. Same goes for Jordan Young, our Secretary. He is another hardworking, touring blues musician, who is ferocious on guitar and vocals. In fact, one of his incarnations is Candy’s Riverhouse Band, who you will hear for yourself with their raucous rockin’ blues at about 10:15 p.m. this Friday at The State Room (more on that in a minute). Tripp Hopkins has been tirelessly keeping track of the numbers as our Treasurer. He also does this for the Masters Swim Team and so is infinitely qualified to do so for us. In his recent retirement, he’s also been drafted by our mothership, The Blues Foundation in Memphis, to be a Board Member! (Did you also know that Eric Simonsen of Ivins, Utah is the CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD at The Blues Foundation?!
The best example of someone who has really stepped it up is Melissa Smith. While her hubby Shane has also jumped into the foray, at his urging, it’s Melissa who has really taken the ball and run with it – showing up at virtually every blues event/gig and selling Memberships and T-shirts. As our designated Volunteer Coordinator/ Merchandise Guru, there’s none finer. She’s also engaged countless others who’ve volunteered here and there at our Blues Fest last Summer, to current events, such as her step-son Damon Smith who’s helped with the website and this Newsletter and Jennifer Faber who’s helping with Social Media. However, the biggest thanks for our stellar website has to go to Gary Pritchard, who twisted the arm of the web genius (Jake Fry) where they both work and got it to where it is today! Thanks so much Jake! Gary can also be seen as a general construction-type go-to guy in getting venues, our tables, etc., ready for you, the attendee. There’s also James Major as our “Education Coordinator” so if you have any ideas there, or want him to do a presentation at your school for example, let him know at TheEvent@aol.com. Big blues fan bar none, Paul Bruno of infamous Bruno Designs, graciously does our top notch T-shirts and other merch to come! Then there’s Gail Kent who is helping to keep the Membership list current. These are just a few of the dedicated blues fans helping out with your UBS. So what can you do for your UBS? What skills do you possess? Let us hear from ya! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to get involved.
The biggest news of course, however, is our UBS Member Appreciation Holiday party this Friday, December 19th at The State Room! Go to our website, www.utahbluessociety.org or see us on Facebook FFI. Remember that you don’t have to be a member to attend (but the music sure sounds better if you are and you’ll get credit in heaven!) so please become one. Tell a friend - encourage them to become a member too. As usual, we will be able to sign up new members at the event but wouldn’t it be nice to just focus more on having fun and socializing?! So becoming a member in advance on our website is infinitely preferable. Just gitter done now and fully relax and enjoy the party! And don’t be late! Socializing starts at 7 p.m. and at 8 p.m. sharp, yours truly will be presenting a big screen Blues Trivia Contest! Now just because you don’t think you’re a blues aficionado, don’t think you shouldn’t do the contest– you should! You’ll have fun and you’ll learn something– guaranteed. There’ll also be prizes of CDs and whatnot. Speaking of CDs, there will also be bins of killer blues CDs for $5 (or $10 for a few select top shelf ones) so be sure to come early and browse. We’ll also have a pair of tickets for each night of Tommy Castro at the Park City Egyptian Theatre (12/21, 22 and 23) as part of a small silent auction! Of course, we’ll also have our four different styled T-shirts (2 for men and 2 V-neck styled ones for women) which are $20 -- or simply become a member for $25 or more, and get one for free! As you can see, lots going on and lots of fun to be had this Friday so seeya there!!
Hope to see you out and about at an upcoming show. Till then...
