From the President... June 3, 2015
Greetings once again Blues Fans!!
Good morning Blues Fans!! Rise and shine, it’s time to secure some Utah Blues Festival (UBF) tickets!!!! Utah Blues Society President Brian Kelm here with the 6th UBS Newsletter! 1ST ANNUAL UTAH BLUES FESTIVAL
The day will kick off at 1 pm with the Music Garage Blues Band. DON’T MISS THIS. This is a special collection of blues enthusiast teens who are sounding so good, they’re thinking of “taking this show on the road”! Expect a tribute to the late, great B.B. King with an impressive version of 'The Thrill is Gone." In fact, the whole day will be dedicated to the greatest of all blues figures, B.B. King!! The Thrill will NEVER be gone. (BTW, KRCL still has posted a streaming special I did 2 weeks ago on BB King krcl.org) It’s so heartwarming to see and hear young teens paying reverence to the blues. That is one of the missions of your UBS in “keepin’ the blues alive.” Thanks Steve Auerbach of The Music Garage for your dedication in getting these kids into it.
The day continues with a dozen more bands which you can best look up at UtahBluesFest/lineup. It’ll cap off at 8:30 p.m. with headliners Café R&B on the Amphitheater Stage (the “main stage”). Another do-not-miss-show! Have you ever seen lead singer Roach crawling around like a Crawlin’ King Snake baring her soul and singing her heart out? No, unless you were at their 2010 Utah Arts Fest performance, you may not have. To date, it’s been their one and only Utah gig. But now’s your chance. Think I’m kidding? See here: caferandb.com.
Legendary Portland, OR guitar slinger, Lloyd Jones, on the other hand, has played Utah a couple times, but the last one was 8/26/02 at the Dead Goat Saloon live on 90.9 FM KRCL!! Wow, it’s been awhile, but he hasn’t slowed down a bit and is busy as ever – having earned the respect of Portland’s prestigious blues scene as being at the very pinnacle of their fertile grounds. His accolades would fill the rest of this Newsletter so suffice it so say, see here: lloydjonesmusic.com/awards
Lloyd is becoming as well known for his solo acoustic blues as he is with his good rockin’ blues band, The Lloyd Jones Struggle. And you can see both! He will be doing a solo acoustic show on Thursday, June 11 at Gracie’s and again on Friday, June 12 at the Bleu Bistro. The Bistro gig on Friday is also MEMBER APPRECIATION NIGHT – your UBS has got you covered! If you get this Newsletter, you’re in! No cover charge for UBS Members so come on down (though per Utah law, being a restaurant, you must buy something, anything so come hungry for the early Bistro show, 7:00 p.m. as usual), and get some of their delicious inexpensive food and enjoy Lloyd in a solo acoustic blues setting. Do you have to be a UBS Member?! No, we’re buried getting ready for the UBF so no one’s going to screen you at the door… but might you fall down the stairs and break your leg on the way out if you’re NOT a Member??!! … no guarantee, karma’s a powerful thing! So do the right thing, and become a Member - if you’re not already (UtahBluesSociety/Membership) At the UBF on 6/13, he’ll be electric, with a full band, so you’ll see him in a completely different setting there! He’ll also be back 6/28 for the Utah Arts Fest with full band.
Keep up to speed with our social media for the latest: UtahBluesSociety.org and UtahBluesFest.org and Facebook pages for each. And then, share all these social media with your friends. Especially you bands – tell your fans about the UBS and the UBF!
