(Issue #9)

Greetings once again Blues Fans!!

Good evening Blues Fans! It’s blues time in the city, with a plethora of activities in the upcoming days – starting with a real favorite around these parts, Tab Benoit, tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 16 at 9:00 p.m. at Park City’s O.P. Rockwell. Thursday is Blackberry Smoke for some Southern rock/blues ala Skynyrd/The Allman Bros. at 8 p.m. at The Depot.

This weekend, it’s the brothers who gave us The Blasters – Dave and Phil Alvin – but don’t expect rockabilly, this show will be nothin’ but the blues. Their latest release is “Common Ground”, a tribute to their hero and mentor, blues legend Big Bill Broonzy. “Lost Time” is their brand new CD that actually releases this Friday and is another tribute to blues artists that influenced them. That’s this Friday and Saturday, 9 p.m. at The State Room. Also this weekend, on Saturday, amazing vocalist Beth Hart will belt out the blues (and some rock!) at The Depot at 8 p.m. Another do not miss show!

Sunday you get to go to church and get some redemption (and hopefully some gospel and salvation) because it fires right back up with the blues on Monday, September 21 at Hog Wallow with the Steepwater Band out of Chicago, and their nod to early British blues, combined with a modern, raw and gutsy musical approach.

Then, it’s the event we are most excited about - the Utah debut of the new documentary about the king of the blues, Mr. B.B. King “The Life of Riley” at Brewvies Cinema Pub Wednesday, September 23. We wanted to do it on what would have been B.B.’s 90th birthday (tomorrow, 9/16) but Brewvies had a conflict and Tab is playing at O.P. Rockwell and we all will be there! This feature length film (123 mins.) will give you an excellent insight into this giant of a man, released just prior to his May 14, 2015 death due to complications from diabetes. DO NOT MISS THIS EXTRAORDINARY FILM. Your UBS will be in attendance with blues CD’s for sale and brand new merchandise (including the much requested hoodie), so come early (6 p.m.) to peruse and socialize. In fact the UBS will be at all of the above shows so come see us!!!

And, as an added bonus, at 6:45 p.m. yours truly will be hosting a very special B.B. King Trivia Contest with tons of prizes. Remember, we are all out of school (aren’t we?!) so this is not a test of your knowledge, this is a fun way to learn more about the coolest cat who ever walked the earth (trust me, he is). The movie will then screen at 7:45 p.m. since they have a 10 p.m. screening of something else and need time to turn over the theater. Tickets at the door are just a $5 donation to your UBS.

Looking ahead to October, the music never stops… 10/3 ZZ Ward; 10/6 Blues Traveler; 10/10 Greg Allman - all of these at The Depot! 10/16 & 17 Big Brother & The Holding Company at the Park City Egyptian Theatre; and 10/24 is the one week long Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale where a few cabins just opened up!! Several of us SLC’ers will be on board and you should too - you won’t regret it!

One of KRCL’s blues shows, Backporch Blues Ramble has changed times and is now heard on Sunday mornings, 5 – 7 a.m. so check it out. And don’t forget that it’s Fall Radiothon time for all KRCL programming from September 26–October 4 so show your support, particularly for the blues (Red White & Blues on Mondays, 8 – 10:30 p.m. and Illustrated Blues on Fridays, 3 – 5 a.m. are the other two blues programs).

For some of you, this may well be the first Newsletter you’ve received. We’ve heard from several of you that you don’t get our Newsletter. This is probably a function of the basic WordPress MailPoet substandard software we’ve been using, combined with the fact that it may have ended up in your Junk folder. In any event, we have upgraded to the ubiquitous MailChimp and hope that everyone now gets these Newsletters! You can even “catch up” on the goings-on of the UBS by reading all prior ones here to see what we’ve been up to and what you’ve missed. Our website is undergoing a makeover so you will see lots of new and improved changes over the coming days/weeks. Keep checking the site for more news about the blues and we’ll see you at all the above shows and especially the B.B. King movie at Brewvies 9/23/15:

  • 6:00 p.m. Doors, arrive to socialize, check out new UBS schwag.
  • 6:45 p.m. B.B. King Trivia Contest followed by prizes
  • 7:45 p.m. B.B. King movie screening: “The Life of Riley”
  • ... Love Them Blues,

    Brian Kelm - UBS President
